Vitamin C: high-dose infusion therapy

Vitamin C is an indispensable vitamin in many cell and tissue processes and as a radical scavenger. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is essentially involved in many cell and tissue processes. It is one of the antioxidants that can particularly effectively ward off and neutralize so-called “free radicals.” In addition, vitamin C exerts its beneficial effects in many ways in the body's hormonal regulatory systems; it is indispensable there too.

Vitamin C is involved in numerous biochemical and physiological processes:

Vitamin C and fat metabolism

  • Cholesterol levels

  • Triglycerides and LDL cholesterol

  • HDL cholesterol

  • Bile acid production

Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system

  • Formation of immune cells (leukocytes)

  • Production of antibodies (IgA, IgG, IgM)

  • Exchange of information between immune cells

  • Phagocytes (phagocytosis)

  • Breakdown of histamine

  • Non-specific immune system

Vitamin C and metabolism

Antioxidant properties of vitamin C

  • Binding of free radicals

  • Regeneration of the reduced form of vitamin E

  • Iron metabolism

  • Increased iron absorption

  • Oxygen supply

  • Iron storage (ferritin complex)

Vitamin C is involved in the synthesis of ...

  • Collagen (skin and connective tissue)

  • Tetrahydrofolic acid (folic acid, blood formation)

  • Catecholamines (nerve messengers)

  • Hormones of the brain

How does a vitamin C infusion differ from vitamin C taken orally?

With intravenous administration, the substance enters the bloodstream directly. The gastrointestinal tract is bypassed, so there is neither a burden on the stomach nor a loss of effectiveness due to hydrochloric acid. Higher concentrations of the vitamin are also possible thanks to precise dosing.

What are the risks of a vitamin C infusion?

Side effects of vitamin C infusions are rather rare. In very rare cases, mild cardiovascular disturbances may occur during the infusion, which may manifest as shortness of breath, nausea and/or dizziness. To avoid contraindications, before starting infusion therapy at our practice we check how well your body can tolerate it and inform you about the course of invasive therapies.

How many mg of vitamin C does an infusion contain?

Depending on individual needs, we can administer the following amounts of vitamin C:vitamin C infusion with 7.5 g or 15 g (higher doses are possible after consultation with the naturopathic practitioner (Heilpraktiker) and a comprehensive physical examination)Interesting fact for you!!! One capsule of vitamin C contains 500 mg of the raw material. An infusion with high-dose vitamin C (7.5 g) therefore corresponds to 15 capsules. The bioavailability of intravenous administration is 100%. If the active substance is administered orally, you have to bear in mind that the bioavailability is less than 100%. You would therefore have to consume more than 15 capsules to absorb the same amount as with intravenous administration.

At what intervals should a vitamin C infusion be given?

The intervals of the infusion therapy are determined according to physical needs in consultation with the naturopathic practitioner. We kindly ask our patients to keep a record of their well-being during the therapies at our practice.

How long does infusion therapy last?

The duration of the actual therapy also depends on the physical well-being of the patient, so no exact period can be determined. Our patients are usually re-examined 3 weeks after the start of therapy using physical testing methods (laboratory diagnostics and/or muscle test).

Can vitamin C also be administered in combination with other substances?

In our practice, we often combine vitamin C with other infusion additives, such as various vitamins, minerals, amino acids and homeopathic remedies. Here, too, it is important for us to examine individual needs using physical testing methods (laboratory diagnostics and/or muscle test) before intravenous administration.Studies / sources on vitamin C:Vitamin C – Antioxidans gegen Atemwegsinfekte (Vitamin C – antioxidant against respiratory infections)Reinhard Saller1, Christine Römer-Lüthi2, Reto Brignoli3, Remy Meier UniversitätsSpital, Institut für Naturheilkunde, CH-Zürich; Berner Fachhochschule Gesundheit, CH-Bern; Tradyser GmbH, CH-Rüschlikon; Medizinische Universitätsklinik, Abteilung für Gastroenterologie, CH-LiestalNew research discusses whether high-dose vitamin C has pro-oxidative effects and influences epigenetic processes. Whether this plays a role in cancer is the subject of research. The treatment of cancer belongs in the hands of physicians; a vitamin C infusion does not replace oncological therapy.SourceMore articles on this topic: Wheatgrass – full power!Detox - detoxificationInfusions and nutrient regimens for vitamin deficiencyMore about vitamin C infusionVitamin C – the world-famous multifunctional vitamin
