Mitochondriopathy and Mitochondrial Medicine

By Yesha KarmeliPublished Updated

Mitochondria are the power plants of the cells; their task is to produce ATP, the body's own energy-transferring substance produced in our cells.

What Does Mitochondriopathy Mean?

Mitochondriopathy is a term for functional disorders of the mitochondria.  Mitochondria are the power plants of the cells; their task is to produce ATP, the body's own energy-transferring substance produced in our cells. Mitochondriopathy is sometimes also referred to as mitochondrial dysfunction, which can result in a very large and varied multisystem disease. The common feature of mitochondriopathy is impaired cell performance and cell control.

What Effect Does the Cell's Functional Disorder Have?

The affected cells slow down and malfunction. The body can compensate for this for a certain time. According to naturopathic thinking, emotional or physical stress can additionally disrupt cell metabolism. Each person reacts individually. In naturopathy, such functional disorders are associated with so-called diseases of civilization and multisystem diseases.

How Can Mitochondriopathy Be Detected?

  • Special laboratory diagnostics can provide indications of a functional disorder of the mitochondria

  • Muscle test diagnostics (kinesiological muscle test) are used to look for indications of mitochondriopathy; this method is not scientifically recognized

In biological medicine, the view is held that many chronic diseases may be related to impaired mitochondrial function; in this generality, this has not been scientifically proven.Mitochondriopathy is associated with:

  • Dementia, Alzheimer's disease, memory impairment up to a decline in brain function

  • Parkinson's disease

  • Epilepsy

  • Depression

  • Schizophrenia

  • Burnout syndrome

  • Chronic fatigue syndrome / CFS

  • ADHD

  • Concentration disorders

  • Diabetes mellitus

  • Overweight

  • Metabolic syndrome

  • Autoimmune diseases

  • Heart attack

  • Stroke

  • Arteriosclerosis

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)

  • Food intolerances, allergic reactions (hay fever, asthma, skin)

  • Food allergies

  • Asthma

  • Atopic dermatitis

  • Hormonal dysfunctions (thyroid, adrenal glands, neurotransmitters)

  • Chronic inflammation and more...

Procedure in the Case of Suspected Mitochondriopathy

If, after a detailed anamnesis, there is a suspicion of a functional disorder of the mitochondria, selected blood and urine parameters can be determined. On this basis, we discuss holistic measures; freedom from symptoms cannot be promised. The diseases listed above require medical treatment.
