Kryptopyrroluria (KPU)

Kryptopyrroluria – the controversial metabolic disorder

Opinions are divided on kryptopyrroluria (KPU), now usually referred to as hemopyrrollactamuria (HPU). Conventional medicine states that a finding of pyrroluria has not been proven to be associated with any disease. In contrast, holistic alternative medicine has long been concerned with the detection and treatment of corresponding metabolic disorders. In the following article, we explain what kryptopyrroluria is and how we can support you further in this regard.

What is kryptopyrroluria?

Orthomolecular medicine speaks of kryptopyrroluria when pyrroles (building blocks of the blood pigment hemoglobin) can be detected in the urine. Normally, pyrroles are excreted in the stool. If increased amounts of pyrroles occur in the body due to impaired hemoglobin formation, they are also excreted in the urine and can be detected there.

Kryptopyrroluria – opposing views

As already mentioned, there are different assessments of kryptopyrroluria. Conventional medicine regards kryptopyrroluria as a pseudo-disease, while naturopathic practice has been intensively concerned with possible causes and corresponding therapies for decades. In orthomolecular medicine, the detection of pyrroles in the urine is regarded as an indication of a physical imbalance. Losses of nutrients (in particular zinc, manganese and vitamin B6) are discussed in this context, among other things.

Kryptopyrroluria – we are happy to support you!

For the reasons mentioned above, it is not possible to diagnose kryptopyrroluria beyond doubt. However, if a urine test shows that pyrroles are being excreted in the urine, we can test your blood for the following parameters:

Based on the results, we then draw up an individual treatment plan for you. We discuss it with you in detail.
