Complaints relating to the gut

A holistic perspective

Intestinal cleansing ("Darmsanierung") – what the term means

In naturopathy, the term "Darmsanierung" (intestinal cleansing) is used as an umbrella term for various holistic concepts dealing with digestion, diet and lifestyle. It is not a medical measure and is not uniformly defined.

In holistic approaches, the gut is understood as part of complex bodily processes that can be influenced by diet, everyday habits and individual stresses, among other things. These connections are interpreted in different ways and continue to be researched scientifically.

The following notes are general, non-binding information. They do not replace individual medical advice. Nor can they replace treatment by a physician, psychotherapist or physiotherapist. We consider the services of physicians, psychotherapists and physiotherapists to be very important. Therefore, ongoing treatment should not be interrupted or discontinued, and treatment that becomes necessary should not be postponed. No promises are made that healing or success will occur.

Lifestyle and the gut – a holistic perspective

Naturopathic models discuss the idea that modern lifestyle habits can influence the digestive system. These include:

  • dietary habits

  • eating behavior (e.g. meal rhythm, eating speed)

  • amount of physical activity in everyday life

  • dealing with stress

  • taking medication

These factors are not seen as causes but as part of an individual overall assessment.

Non-specific discomfort – general context

In connection with digestion and lifestyle, the specialist literature describes numerous non-specific everyday complaints. These cannot be clearly attributed, can have many different causes and do not allow conclusions about individual organs or systems.

Examples of frequently mentioned general sensations may include:

  • subjective discomfort

  • a changed sense of energy

  • skin no longer feels as clear and fresh

  • changes in sleep or in how stress is experienced

  • fluctuations in general well-being

These observations do not replace a medical evaluation.

Holistic approach

In holistic medicine, the focus is often on consciously engaging with individual lifestyle habits, diet, exercise and stress management. The aim is reflective support, not the treatment or cure of diseases.

Intestinal cleansing – the term from a holistic perspective, and colon hydrotherapy

In naturopathy, the term "Darmsanierung" (intestinal cleansing) is used as an umbrella term for various holistic concepts that deal with digestion, diet and lifestyle. It is not medically defined and is not a medical measure.

In this context, naturopathic methods such as colon hydrotherapy and diet-related concepts such as the use of probiotics are discussed, among other things. These approaches serve as accompanying considerations within individual consultations and are not associated with any guaranteed effect or treatment success.

Possible contexts of use in holistic concepts

In holistic models, intestinal cleansing concepts are discussed in connection with the following questions, among others:

• engaging with individual digestive habits

• reflecting on dietary and lifestyle factors

• observing digestion over a longer period of time

• a general feeling of exhaustion or strain

These classifications cannot replace medical diagnostics or therapy by a physician or psychotherapist in individual cases. No naturopathic statements are made about detoxification, elimination, deacidification or healing, since although these are traditionally discussed, they are not scientifically proven.

Further information

You can find further general information on our topic page on

colon hydrotherapy and the holistic view of the gut.

(Note: terms such as colon cleansing, gut rebuilding or intestinal cleansing are used there purely as names for naturopathic models/concepts, without any indication or promise of healing or success. Although they are traditionally discussed, they are not scientifically proven.)

Intestinal flora and microbial balance – general context

The specialist literature describes how the human digestive tract is colonized by a large number of different microorganisms. These are often referred to collectively as the intestinal flora or gut microbiome.

Holistic approaches assume that this microbial environment is dynamic and can be influenced by various factors. These include:

• dietary habits

• lifestyle and stress

• taking certain medications

• individual stressful situations

These connections are complex, vary from person to person and are the subject of ongoing research.

Imbalances – a theoretical view

Naturopathic models discuss the idea that changes in the microbial balance may be accompanied by various non-specific everyday complaints. These are not established cause-and-effect relationships but theoretical classifications.

Links to other body systems are being investigated in research, but they do not allow generalized statements or conclusions about specific diseases.

Abdominal surgery – general information

After surgical procedures in the abdomen, temporary changes in bowel activity can occur. These phenomena are known from medical practice and are experienced very differently by different people.

The care and assessment of such situations is the responsibility of medical aftercare.
