How Plasticizers Work
So-called plasticizers are plastics with strongly polar groups on the chain, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). They can form strong dipole interactions with the neighboring chain. As a result, these plastics are very stiff and brittle. Because of their molecular structure, esters and polyalcohols have a polar character. The polar molecules of the plasticizer embed themselves between the polymer chains. This reduces the dipole forces between the chains, and the material becomes more flexible. The flexibility can be controlled by the amount of plasticizer added; in PVC, up to about 50 % plasticizer is added.
