Lead exposure – lead poisoning: absorption and distribution in the body
Although the use of lead is severely restricted in Germany, poisoning can still occur today.
One possible source of the pollutant is lead-containing anti-rust paint.
About 10 percent (adults) and about 50 percent (children) of inorganic lead compounds are absorbed via the gastrointestinal tract. The most important storage site in the body is the skeleton: about 90 percent of an adult's body burden is found in the bones. In children, this proportion is only about 60 percent. Other storage organs are the red blood cells (erythrocytes), liver and kidneys. Even in small doses, lead has a harmful effect on the nervous and blood-forming systems and on the kidneys with chronic exposure. First disorders are observed at a blood lead concentration above 100 micrograms per liter.
