Cholesterol belongs to the group of lipids (fats). Lipids are fat-like natural substances that are not soluble in water. Cholesterol performs many vital functions in the body and is an elementary component of cell membranes, which form the boundary of every body cell. The body also needs it to absorb fats and fat-soluble vitamins and to produce vitamin D and hormones such as estrogen, testosterone, and cortisone.
Fats such as cholesterol and triglycerides cannot circulate freely in the blood because they do not dissolve in water. In order to circulate in the blood, they bind to proteins or other substances, forming so-called lipoproteins.
There are different types of lipoproteins. Each type has its own function and is broken down and excreted in a slightly different way. Lipoproteins mainly include high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Cholesterol transported with LDL is called LDL cholesterol, and cholesterol transported with HDL is called HDL cholesterol.
The body can regulate the level of lipoproteins (and thus also the lipid level) by increasing or decreasing the production of lipoproteins. It can also control how quickly lipoproteins enter and are removed from the bloodstream.
A high concentration of certain lipids (especially cholesterol) can lead to problems such as arteriosclerosis in the long term. In addition to a healthy diet and exercise, naturopathy also addresses various amino acids, such as L-arginine, which is described in naturopathy in connection with the width of blood vessels and elevated cholesterol levels. Elevated cholesterol levels and vascular changes should be evaluated by a physician.
Certain minerals such as magnesium are also described in naturopathy in connection with cholesterol metabolism. This involves looking at a complex interplay of various vitamins/minerals/amino acids and their cofactors.
Lipid peroxidation, in turn, refers to the oxidative degradation (i.e., breakdown taking place in the presence of oxygen) of lipids. In this process, free radicals "steal" electrons from lipids in the cell membrane, causing a chain reaction that can lead to cell damage.
