Oxygen Therapy: Oxyvenation

By Yesha KarmeliPublished Updated

What happens during oxygen therapy (oxyvenation)

We can go without water for days and even without food for weeks. Without oxygen, however, we survive only a few minutes. Every one of our cells needs oxygen to perform its tasks, because without oxygen there would be no life! An adequate supply of oxygen to the cells is crucial for how vital, healthy and productive we are. In addition to the oxygen the body takes in through the lungs, oxygen therapy enriches the blood with oxygen directly via the veins. Pure medical oxygen is administered intravenously in small doses. In our practice, we usually use oxygen therapy in combination with infusion therapy, but it can also be used on its own.

Why does our body need oxygen?

In the lungs, oxygen from the air we breathe is taken up into the blood and distributed to the cells throughout the body via the bloodstream. In cellular metabolism, the cell uses oxygen to break down sugar. This produces energy in the form of ATP. This process is also called cellular respiration and takes place in the mitochondria. Without oxygen, our cells cannot produce energy! A good supply of oxygen to the cells is essential, especially in the case of pathological changes in our body such as inflammatory processes. In naturopathy, the oxygen supply of the cells is also described in connection with blood circulation, the body’s self-healing powers and the immune response.

Possible side effects of oxygen therapy?

Like every form of therapy, oxygen therapy has side effects. The following complications can occur:

  • Urge to cough
  • Feeling of pressure in the chest
  • Fatigue
  • flu-like symptoms
  • Headache

These symptoms usually subside. Nevertheless, please report any complications to your treating therapist.

Duration of oxygen therapy (oxyvenation)

Oxygen therapy is individual and depends on your personal health needs. Oxygen therapy can be applied up to daily. Patients are often treated with oxygen therapy once or twice a week over a period of 5 weeks.

In our practice, oxyvenation is often used in combination with infusion therapy.

At an initial appointment in our practice, we will be happy to examine you and then give you an individual therapy recommendation.

What should be considered during oxygen therapy?

During therapy, we recommend moderate physical activity. You should try to avoid extreme exertion. We also recommend avoiding nicotine and alcohol during therapy and paying attention to a balanced diet. In general, your eating, exercise and sleeping habits of course largely determine your state of health. We will also be happy to advise you on how to make your lifestyle healthier and how to change negative habits. Oxygen treatment does not change the INR/Quick value during treatment with Marcumar (phenprocoumon).

Duration & costs – oxygen therapy (oxyvenation):

  • one treatment takes approx. 30 min
  • we recommend weekly sessions over a period of 4 to 5 weeks
  • One treatment costs €45

How is oxygen therapy carried out?

In oxygen therapy (also called oxyvenation), medical oxygen is administered intravenously in small amounts, slowly and in precisely measured doses. Usually, treatment begins with a smaller amount of O2. Depending on individual needs, the dosage is then increased from session to session until the maximum amount is reached.

What does “intravenous” administration mean in relation to oxygen therapy?

In medicine, intravenous administration means giving special substances directly into the vein using a cannula. In oxygen therapy, we use a thin cannula so that the puncture is barely noticeable. The advantage compared to

How long does oxygen therapy take?

In our practice, we usually start the oxygen course by administering a lower dose of O2. We begin with 15 minutes of oxygen and increase from session to session up to 30 minutes. Please also allow a few minutes for preparation.

At what intervals should oxygen therapy be carried out?

The intervals of oxygen therapy are determined according to physical needs in consultation with the naturopathic practitioner (Heilpraktiker). We kindly ask our patients to keep a record of how they feel during the therapy sessions in our practice.

What should be considered during oxygen therapy?

Stimulants such as alcohol and tobacco should be avoided as far as possible during the course of treatment. Above all, nicotine should be avoided. We ask our patients to refrain from smoking during this time in order to avoid contraindications as far as possible.

When should oxygen therapy be avoided?

Oxygen therapy should be avoided in acute febrile illnesses (such as pneumonia). Severe trauma and/or atrial septal defects are also considered contraindications. To give our patients peace of mind, a thorough preliminary consultation with the naturopathic practitioner Yesha Karmeli is held before therapy begins.

How much oxygen is administered during a session?

We can administer up to 30 ml of medical oxygen during a session. Please note that we start with a smaller amount at first to prepare the body optimally for the therapy.

Can oxygen therapy be combined with other treatment methods?

In our practice, we combine oxygen therapy with individually tailored nutrient infusions. These special infusions consist of a mixture of vitamins, amino acids, minerals and/or homeopathic remedies. You can find more information on infusion therapy HERE.

Oxygen therapy and aging processes (anti-aging)

With increasing age, the performance of the lungs, heart and circulation changes, which leads to reduced oxygen uptake. In oxygen therapy, additional oxygen is supplied to the body intravenously. In naturopathy, the method is also described in connection with aging processes. No effect on circulation, well-being, skin appearance or signs of aging can be guaranteed.

There is no scientific evidence of its effects according to the recognized rules and principles of scientific research. The described consequences of treatment are based solely on empirical knowledge. Their course also always depends on the patient’s individual factors. A specific effect can therefore not be guaranteed.
