What exactly is DMSO and where is it found as a substance in nature?
DMSO stands for dimethyl sulfoxide, a simple, natural substance. DMSO, which is liquid at room temperature as a pure substance, is present in traces everywhere in nature, especially in the atmosphere and in plants, which incorporate it into their structural substance. It is formed by atmospheric oxidation from a precursor that marine plankton produce from sulfur.
How is DMSO described and used in naturopathy?
Dr. Fischer describes DMSO as a substance that mediates between fat-soluble and water-soluble areas/substances in the body and in this context speaks of a "channel opener". All forms of application are possible: external, internal, infusion/injection, enema, eye drops. Depending on the area of application, diluted solutions of DMSO between 1 and approx. 90% are used.
In which areas is DMSO used in naturopathy?
In the naturopathic literature, dimethyl sulfoxide is mentioned in connection with acute and chronic processes such as inflammation, deposits, infections and circulatory disorders. Dr. Fischer names areas of application including osteoarthritis/arthritis, rheumatism, neurodegeneration, eye conditions, chronic inflammation and allergies such as sinusitis, middle ear infections, atopic dermatitis, Crohn's disease/ulcerative colitis and thyroiditis, arteriosclerosis and other deposits, poorly healing wounds, smoker's leg and burns, as well as the period before and after operations and scar care. He has published a DMSO handbook on the subject and has given seminars for physicians and naturopathic practitioners (Heilpraktiker). The conditions mentioned require medical diagnosis and treatment.
How did you discover DMSO?
DMSO according to Dr. Hartmut Fischer
Summary once more: DMSO according to Dr. Hartmut Fischer
DMSO is known for influencing the permeability of cell membranes and is therefore also described as a carrier substance. In a naturopathic practice, DMSO is sometimes used in combination with vitamins, minerals and special nutrients.
1. Antioxidant properties
Antioxidant properties are attributed to DMSO. In naturopathy, it is therefore described in connection with free radicals and cell health and is sometimes combined with other antioxidant therapies.
2. Wound healing
In naturopathy, DMSO is also described in connection with wound healing, for example with chronic wounds or after surgical procedures, sometimes in combination with special nutrients. Chronic wounds require medical treatment.
3. Research on the nervous system
Recently, DMSO has also been researched with regard to possible neuroprotective properties. Whether this results in any benefit for neurodegenerative diseases remains open.

In a naturopathic practice, DMSO is used in various forms of application. In the naturopathic literature, it is described in connection with pain, inflammation, the permeability of cell membranes, oxidative stress, wound healing and the nervous system, among other things. In practice, DMSO is sometimes combined with vitamins, minerals, amino acids and special additives.
Well, I have known DMSO ever since I became interested in biochemistry, and that was already at school. However, in lessons and at university you initially only get to know it as an excellent solvent. As I said, practically all other substances dissolve in it because of its bipolar character. It was only around 2010 that I became aware that DMSO itself is also described as a natural remedy, when reports were circulating on the internet and I thought to myself: "You've known this for a long time, this sounds extremely interesting …!"Dr. Hartmut Fischer (www.pranatu.de) studied at the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Würzburg, where he subsequently worked in research and also earned his doctorate. Further years in the pharmaceutical industry fostered his commitment to alternative medicine. His focus is on research into and sharing knowledge about simple, natural substances that can be used both in therapeutic practices/clinics and at home on one's own responsibility.Further reading recommendation: (to order: redirects to Amazon)More infusion therapy at Natura Heilpraxis
