The Colon Hydrotherapy Procedure

Naturopathy Berlin: colon hydrotherapy

Colon hydrotherapy – what is it?

Colon hydrotherapy (CHT) is a naturopathic procedure in which filtered water at body temperature is introduced into the large intestine using a special device and then drained again. The aim of the application is to rinse the large intestine as part of holistic health concepts.

The treatment uses a closed, single-use system with an inflow and outflow tube and a speculum. This ensures a hygienic procedure. The drained water may contain dissolved bowel contents that are excreted during the rinsing. Throughout the entire application, particular importance is attached to hygiene, professional supervision and discretion.

Procedure: how does colon hydrotherapy work?

Colon hydrotherapy is carried out in several rinsing cycles. Water is led into the large intestine with slight pressure. As soon as an urge to empty the bowel arises, the water flow is regulated and the bowel contents are drained via the closed system.

A manual abdominal massage may be performed alongside. It relates to the abdominal wall and bowel movement (peristalsis). Sometimes different water temperatures are used to provide autonomic stimuli. This approach is based on naturopathic experience.

The treatment takes place lying on your back and involves only the large intestine. At the end, we introduce a probiotic suspension to accompany the intestinal environment as part of a holistic approach. The application is always carried out by trained professional staff who explain the procedure and are available for questions.

Duration and frequency of colon hydrotherapy

A treatment takes about 60 minutes in total. The actual rinsing time is usually around 45 minutes but can vary individually.

A series of several applications at weekly intervals is often chosen. The number of sessions is discussed individually and is based on your personal situation and the respective support concept. Any continuation or adjustment is agreed with the therapist.

Preparation: what should you keep in mind before colon hydrotherapy?

Before the treatment, it is advisable to avoid very heavy or fatty meals and to drink enough fluids. A balanced, high-fiber diet is generally recommended in the naturopathic context.

Beyond that, no special preparation is required. The treatment can usually be fitted easily into everyday life. It makes sense to plan some time afterwards, as you may occasionally need to go to the toilet again.

Are there side effects of colon hydrotherapy?

When performed properly, colon hydrotherapy is considered well tolerated. At the beginning of the treatment, a feeling of pressure or an urge to empty the bowel may occasionally occur. In rare cases, patients report temporary abdominal cramps, which usually ease during the session.

Because of the accompanying abdominal massage, sensations similar to sore muscles may occasionally occur after the treatment, especially if the abdominal wall is tense. Overall, many people perceive the application as relaxing. Individual sensations may vary, however.

Why colon hydrotherapy?

In holistic health concepts, the gut is assigned a central role. The composition of the intestinal flora (microbiome) is the focus of numerous research approaches, including in connection with digestion, metabolism and immunological processes.

In this context, colon hydrotherapy is regarded as an accompanying measure to mechanically relieve the large intestine and to draw attention to bowel function. Statements about its effect are based on empirical knowledge from naturopathy and do not replace medical diagnosis or treatment.

Colon hydrotherapy and nutrition

A stable intestinal environment is significantly influenced by eating habits. Factors such as medications, antibiotics, highly processed foods or environmental pollutants can change the composition of the intestinal flora.

In the holistic view, it is assumed that a long-standing imbalance (dysbiosis) may be accompanied by functional changes in the intestinal mucosa. Colon hydrotherapy is therefore often combined with nutritional advice, probiotics and other accompanying measures. The aim is to support regulatory processes, not to treat diseases.

Possible areas of application in the naturopathic context

Within holistic concepts, some people consider colon hydrotherapy, among other things, for:

  • accompanying support during dietary changes or periods of fasting

  • functional digestive complaints

  • subjectively perceived sluggish bowels

  • as an accompaniment to changes in the skin's appearance

  • as part of a comprehensive gut balance concept

The assessment is always made individually. This is not a therapy in the sense of conventional medicine.

Colon hydrotherapy and fasting

During periods of fasting, holistic concepts often pay particular attention to the gut. In this context, colon hydrotherapy can be used as a supporting measure to accompany bowel activity. Frequency and procedure should be agreed individually.

Colon hydrotherapy and special life situations

Colon hydrotherapy is generally not recommended during pregnancy. In any case, a professional assessment is required before an application.

Important note

Colon hydrotherapy is a naturopathic procedure. It is not recognized by conventional medicine in the sense of evidence-based medicine. There is no scientific evidence of efficacy according to recognized medical standards. The effects described are based on empirical knowledge and individual feedback. No specific effect can be guaranteed.
